Quilling Art

Quilling

Quilling is an art form that involves the use of strips of paper that are rolled, shaped and glued together to create a decorative designs. It takes a lot of dedication, hard work and time.

Vincent van Gogh's Artwork

With a career that ran a little over than a decade, he produced an astonishing amount of work: 1000 drawings, 160 water colors, 9 lithographs, an etching and over 900 paintings.
I felt his artworks were most interesting to be expressed through a quilling medium.

Saibaba

Sai Baba was an Indian spiritual master who is regarded as a saint, a fakir, a satguru and an incarnation (avatar) of Lord Shiva. He preached the importance of realization of the self and criticized love towards perishable things. His teachings concentrate on a moral code of love, forgiveness, helping others, charity, contentment, inner peace and devotion to God.

It was a little tricky for me to do this initially, cause I was more comfortable with VanGogh's style of modern art. It required a lot of attention to details to attain the correct skin tone.

Bodhisatva Padmapani

"Bodhisatva Padmapani" also known as Avalokitesvara, this is a very famous art and one of the oldest wall paintings in Ajanta caves, India.
The Ajanta Caves have been described by the government Archaeological Survey of India as “the finest surviving examples of Indian art, particularly painting,” and consists of about 30 rock-cut Buddhist cave monuments dating from approximately the 2nd century BCE to about 480 or 650 CE.

This painting can be found to the left on the main shrine. It depicts one of the most beloved bodhisattvas, Avalokitesvara. The term "bodhisattva" refers to a person that has been awakened by the Buddhist spirit. Avalokitesvara takes the largest numbers of forms across Asia. Originally, a masculine form, Avalokitesvara is also known as the feminine Guanyin in China, and Kuan Yin in Japan.

When I first saw this painting at Ajanta caves, I was literally awestruck by its magnificence. The calmness in his face, I felt set the tone and mood of the room it was placed in. This urged me to replicate the painting as a quilling art. It was quite challenging to bring out the same emotions the painting carried through quilling.
